Miele Washing Machine Error Code F51

Miele Washing Machine Error Code F51

Error code F51 indicates a drum motor malfunction or communication failure between the drum motor and the washing machine's control board. This error prevents the drum from rotating properly during the wash cycle.

Symptoms

• Drum does not spin or rotate during wash cycles
• Washing machine stops mid-cycle with F51 displayed on the control panel
• Water remains in the tub because the spin cycle cannot execute
• Unusual grinding, squealing, or motor-related noises coming from the machine
• Machine may run normally through water intake but fails during actual washing or spinning phases
• Error code persists even after attempting to restart the appliance

Possible Causes

• Faulty drum motor that has reached end of service life
• Loose or corroded electrical connections between the motor and control board
• Motor wiring harness damaged or disconnected inside the machine
• Defective motor control relay or capacitor on the main circuit board
• Drive belt worn out, broken, or slipped off the motor pulley
• Foreign object (coin, wire, small item) lodged between drum and tub causing motor overload
• Control board software glitch or sensor communication failure
• Power supply issues from 120V household outlet not providing adequate voltage to motor
• Thermal overload switch triggered from motor overheating during previous cycles
• Bearing failure in the drum assembly creating excessive friction preventing rotation

Safe Checks You Can Do

• Verify the circuit breaker controlling the washing machine is in the ON position; if tripped, switch OFF then back ON to reset
• Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet and wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in to perform a full system reset
• Check that both the hot and cold water supply valves behind or beneath the washing machine are fully open (turned counterclockwise)
• Inspect the drain hose at the back of the machine for kinks, pinches, or blockages that could cause backup pressure
• Open the detergent dispenser and filter areas to check for foreign objects, lint, or debris that may have lodged in the system
• Ensure you are not overloading the drum beyond the manufacturer's recommended capacity for your specific Miele model
• Verify the door is closing completely and the door latch is engaging fully with an audible click
• Remove any items from inside the drum and manually attempt to rotate the drum by hand through the open door to check for obvious obstructions
• Test a different electrical outlet in another room to rule out outlet or wiring problems at that location
• Consult your Miele washing machine user manual for model-specific reset procedures if the standard reset does not clear the error
